The Zorn Palette

I really enjoy painting with oils but I don't really have enough time or space to do it very often. One of my absolute favourite artists is Anders Zorn and I remember seeing this stunning painting at CFHILL a few months ago.

Apart from his excellent technical skills, I'm so fascinated by the fact that he used so few colours: titanium white, yellow ochre, vermilion red and ivory black. When I took a painting course at the Royal Drawing School in London we studied the so-called "Zorn palette", especially when rendering skin tones.

It's quite amazing how many hues you can get from four tubes of paint. Read more here.
